Anti-graft chief fears for his life after night scare in city
Police are investigating an incident in which unknown people hit a car that Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission Chairman Mumo Matemu had been driven in.
Nairobi Traffic Commandant Edward Mwamburi on Sunday said no one was injured.
“We are trying to establish the owner of the vehicle and the occupants,” he said.
The car had just dropped off Mr Matemu at his residence in Kileleshwa on Friday night when it was hit twice by a van on Chiromo road in Nairobi.
The anti-graft boss said on Sunday that his life is in danger.
Police said Mr Matemu was not using his car. The one he was driven in is the official vehicle of the commission’s Chief Executive Officer Halakhe Waqo’s.
According to Mr Matemu’s aides, they were driving back to town when a van that was trailing them hit their car twice.
The assailants then sped off and the aides, including an armed guard, followed them up to Ojijo road.
They abandoned the car and fled on foot. The vehicle was later towed to Parklands Police Station.
Mr Matemu had earlier written to police asking them to enhance his security after claiming that his life was in danger.
He maintains that the accident was intentional, adding that it could be linked to his work.
Mr Matemu has been in the limelight in the recent past.
On Tuesday, he together with his deputy Irene Keino will know their fate following a petition for their removal.
Some members of the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee plan to remove them. They met in State House on Wednesday over the issue.
