There is a surge in armed robberies targeting taxi drivers in Nairobi, police records indicate.

In the last one week, at least ten driver have been attacked, four of them being robbed of their cars.

Police have also said that one of the gang members is a woman.

POSE AS CUSTOMERS

On Sunday night, two taxi drivers were robbed of their cars in separate incidents after they were approached by gunmen who posed as customers.

In Ruai, Mr Wilson Nyakundi who operates taxi services at St Francis hospital was approached by a man and a woman who asked to be taken to Kenol in Muranga.

The two told Mr Nyakundi that they were going to pick their aging father. They reached Kenol where an old man and another man joined the two.

They then produced a pistol and a pair of handcuffs and threatened to shoot him.

They then forced him to drink some liquid before dumping him at the scene. They robbed him of Sh5, 000 and drove away with his car, a Toyota Fielder registration number KBC 205V.

The same night two men approached another taxi driver, Mr Francis Irungu Mwiki, at Afya Centre along Tom Mboya Street and asked him to take them to Mathare.

PRODUCE PISTOL

On reaching the Utalii drift opposite Utalii hotel, one of them produced a pistol and ordered Mr Mwiki to park and get out of the driver seat.

They used shoe laces to tie his hand on the back and drove back before joining Kiambu road.

He was then dumped near the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters. He was robbed of Sh1, 300, ID card and the driving licence before the gunmen drove away in his car, a Toyota NZE.
Both vehicles are yet to be recovered.
