Babu Owino arrested, to be charged in court

Sonu leader Babu Owino was arrested Wednesday night and is expected to be charged in court on Thursday with causing grievous bodily harm.

Kilimani DCI boss Phyllis Kanina has said that the University of Nairobi student leader assaulted his rival Mike Jacobs in Kileleshwa in March.

Owino and an unidentified friend were caught on camera slapping a hapless Jacobs in a video that went viral on social media.

Last month, Owino won the Sonu chairmanship in a bitterly contested elections, whose results were disputed by his opponents leading to widespread protests.

RUNNING BATTLES

The students engaged police in running battles for four days before the institution was closed with tens of students either suspended or expelled.

At the same time, some students have vowed to stage mass protests on Thursday between Kilimani and Nairobi CBD to push for Owino’s release.

Owino, currently pursuing a second degree at UoN where he is a 3rd year student, also intends to vie for the Embakasi East parliamentary seat.

His supporters claim that the police are working with his opponents to frustrate his bid.
