Bahati MP robbed along Uhuru highway

An MP and members of his family were on Wednesday night robbed of their belongings while stuck in a traffic jam along Uhuru highway on their way to the city centre.

Bahati MP Onesmus Kimani Ngunjiri was accompanied by his two children during the 9pm incident behind Laico Regency hotel.

Mr Ngunjiri was not accompanied by a bodyguard.

Traffic police officers deployed on the highway say they did not witness the incident. Other motorists stuck in the traffic jam did not come to the MP’s aid either.

According to the MP, two men on a motorcycle a rode past him before one of them alighted, walked to his vehicle and knocked the window severally while threatening to kill him if he did not open.

“The man robbed him of two mobile phones and Sh 1,000,” Central Police Station OCPD, Patrick Oduma said.

Mr Oduma said the robber made away after robbing the MP but did not injure anyone.

Cases of robbery have been on the rise along Uhuru Highway and the Kenyatta Avenue near the Serena Hotel.

Last week, the body of a middle aged man who is yet to be identified was found near the intersection between the Uhuru Highway and Kenyatta Avenue.

The man had been hit with blunt objects on the head and robbed of his belongings including shoes.

Mr Oduma said that police will sweep out all the hawkers and newspaper vendors doing business in the area past 5:30pm.

“The robbers in the area are reported to be pretending to be vendors and hawkers before robbing the victims.” Mr Oduma said.
