Cake enthusiasts flocked the Kenya Wildlife Service headquarters at the weekend to sample different cakes that were on offer during the annual Cake festival.

More than 70 bakers exhibited their products during the charity event organized by Edumed Trust to help send more bright needy students to secondary schools in Kenya.

The big winner of the day was Ms Beatrice Muteru who started off as simple sconce seller to becoming the owner of one of the leading cake company’s in Nairobi.

Ms Muteru’s Joybells Cake Centre scooped several awards at the event including in the student categories – theme cake (the theme of the day was celebrating anniversary since Edumed trust were celebrating 25 years) and signature cakes.

Joybells Cake Centre also won signature cakes in the institution category – which was a wedding cake. They came  first runners up in the theme category.

“We are very grateful to everyone who voted for us. Joybells Cake Center has come a long way and this is just the beginning. We will continue to reinvent ourselves to give our clients the best,” Ms Muteru said.

Ms Muteru has been able to turn a hobby into a booming business that has grown from just a simple cake baker to a center that offers events solutions plus baking classes that offer a one-month comprehensive lessons on how to bake, model and decoration of cakes.

“After doing some wedding cakes some of my clients approached me to ask if I could teach them how to bake the delicious cakes that I was doing. That is how the baking classes begun,” Ms Muteru told Nairobi News.

From her first participation at the Cake Festival in 2010, Ms Muteru has been able to grow her network of clients and suppliers.

“For any celebration there must be a cake or otherwise it would just be a meeting. People do not just want the simple flat cakes, they want designed customized cakes. They are going out to get the information on the different trends in cake which clearly shows that the demand is there,” she says.
