Bank employees, guards arrested over heist

Police are holding a number of I & M bank employees and security guards in connection to the theft of Sh2.4 million at its Changamwe Road Branch in Industrial area.

Initial reports from the Nairobi County Deputy Police Commandant, Moses Ombati indicated that the bank lost Sh40 million during the heist but the bank confirmed later that only Sh2.4 million had been stolen.

The bank stated that one of the ATM cassettes that had not been initially checked had Sh2.4 million which had not been counted.

Mr Ombati said the police were investigating the loss of the cash with suspicion that some employees in cahoots security guards staged it.

“We suspect the robbery was as a result of an inside job” Mr Ombati said.

Makadara OCPD Nehemiah Lagat had on Monday explained that the robbers broke the back door to the bank and stole the amount.

“We have arrested the guards on duty for interrogation as we suspect that they collaborated with the thugs to steal from the bank” Mr Lagat had said.
