Betting firm sponsors Oliech to attend coaching course in S. Africa

Dennis Oliech has edged closer to completely retiring as professional footballer following his enrollment for a coaching course in South Africa.

The celebrated former Harambee Stars has been out of active action since his release by then French top tier club Ajaccio in January 2015.

The former Auxerre and Nantes forward would later announce his retirement from international football last September, but was quick to add in a statement that he expected to find a club to prolong his 13 year old chequered career.

This plan hasn’t materialized yet.

Instead, the striker was appointed brand ambassador by betting firm Betway, a job whose description restricts him from getting actively involved in football either as a player or coach.

Incidentally, Oliech’s impending coaching course will be bankrolled by Betway.

“Oliech will be undergoing a week of training at the famed SA World Coaches KNVB Workshop. The aim is to equip him with the essential skills a football coach will need, that will enable him to take these skills back to Kenya to better improve his hometown and Kenyan football as a whole,” a statement by Betway released earlier this week reads.

Oliech’s tenure at Harambee Stars was punctuated by his breathtaking skills, turn of pace and important goals, alongside moments of controversy.

He is remembered for among other things scoring the goal that enabled Kenya qualify to compete at the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia.
