Board shuts down pubs in Moi University

The Uasin Gishu County government will not renew licenses for bar owners at a trading centre within Moi University in Kesses.

County alcoholic drinks control board boss Armstrong Rono said they have taken the measure after it emerged that the bars, which operate on a 24-hour basis, are used to sell hard drugs to students.

“We have denied them licences, not only to protect students, but also because they are a security threat,” said Mr Rono.

He said the move is also meant to protect pupils of a nearby primary school from accessing alcohol or being lured into using drugs.
