Brace for crazy traffic next week as city hosts UN conference
Nairobians should brace themselves for monster traffic jams next week on roads leading to the CBD as the city hosts a United Nations trade conference.
A total of 23 heads of state and 7,000 delegates are expected to attend the 14th session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) that will be held at Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC).
The conference will run from July 16 to 22.
It will bring together heads of state and government, ministers and prominent players in the business world, civil society and academia to tackle global trade and economic development issues.
The conference, which takes place after every four years, was last held in Nairobi in May, 1976. Other African countries that have played hosts to the conference include Ghana (2008) and South Africa (1996).
Nairobi commuters were last week inconvenienced by lengthy traffic jams occasioned by the visit of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Police had temporarily closed major roads in the city to allow for Mr Netanyahu’s movement. The roads that were closed included Chiromo road, Uhuru Highway, Haile Sellasie Avenue, Parliament Road, Wabera Street, Langata road and State House Avenue.
Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero was himself stuck in the morning traffic and was forced to walk from the city centre to Yaya Centre for an appointment.
