Over 60 families left homeless in prison fire

At least 65 families of prison wardens were left homeless on Sunday after a huge fire destroyed their tin-sheet houses at Nairobi West prison.

The cause of the fire still remains unknown, according to the acting deputy officer in charge of the prison Meshack Momanyi.

Mr Momanyi said 38 houses were completely razed in the  inferno, while 12 other houses had to be demolished to save them from being consumed by the fire.

Unconfirmed reports indicate the fire started in one of the houses belonging to a newlywed couple before it spread to other houses. The couple lost all their wedding gifts in the fire.

The fire was exacerbated by cooking gas cylinders that exploded due to the heat.

Fire fighters from the Nairobi fire brigade contained the fire
