KBC land could be auctioned

Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) land could be put under the auctioneer’s hammer over Sh900m owed to City Hall in land rates.

County Governor Evans Kidero on Thursday put the broadcaster and several other government-owned organisations on notice as a waiver of interest on land rates comes to a close on Saturday.

Extended

Also at risk are a majority of land buying companies in Ruai, Embakasi and Kasarani with Dr Kidero insisting that the waiver period would not be extended.

“Effective Monday, we will start registering our interest in all the pieces of land where rates remain outstanding. We’ll be selling an average of 10 properties per week,” he added.

This week alone, the county government is in the process of selling three properties, the Governor has said.

Chief Revenue Officer Nixon Otieno says the county government will next week file 24 cases seeking orders to auction properties.

So far, the county has collected Sh410 million in the rates drive which falls short of the original target of Sh3 billion.

City Hall had targeted to raise Sh3 billion in the waiver period as it seeks to recover about Sh38 billion it is owed in land rates.

Defaulters are however expected to part with 10 per cent of the interest amount as an administrative charge.

Mr Otieno says some of those at risk include residents who purchased single housing units in estates but failed to give their details to City Hall.

Other organisations owned by the government mentioned for possible auction include Kenya Railways (Sh146m), Kenya Railways Pension Scheme (Sh302m), Kenya Airports Authority (Sh153m) and Kenya Sports Stadia Management Board (Sh252m).
