A man who broke into a shop in Waithaka village in Dagoretti, Nairobi County before he was cornered is awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to charges of breaking into a building.

The suspect, Mr George Muriithi, admitted before the Kibera Law Courts that he broke and entered into Scolastica Ndukanio’s tailoring shop on September 11, 2022 with intent to commit a felony contrary to section 307 of the penal code.

Ms Ndukanio was woken up by a neighbour at around 9pm who informed her that someone was breaking into her shop. The neighbour was returning home after escorting a visitor and when she stumbled on the incident.

The two mobilised other neighbours who escorted Ms Ndukanio to her shop where she found the door ajar and upon entry, they found Mr Muriithi inside.

He stormed out with a metal bar and attempted to run away but was cornered by the members of the public who found him with Ms Ndukanio’s padlock. They led him to Waithaka Police Station where he was arrested and the items kept as exhibits.

In mitigation, Mr Muriithi told Senior Principal Magistrate Philip Mutua that he was drunk and thought he had arrived home when he attempted to open the door without success before breaking in.

The magistrate ordered for a social inquiry report of the convict to be tabled on September 21 before sentencing him. The suspect will remain in custody.
