Buru Buru shoppers set to pay for parking

Shoppers in Buru Buru and 10 other centres outside Nairobi city centre will from February be required to pay parking fees to the county government.

The county’s chief accountant in-charge of parking Tom Tinega on Wednesday said they would collect parking fees in Buru Buru, Eastleigh, Pangani, Muthaiga, Ngong Road, Kombo Munyiri, Pangani Road, Lang’ata, Kariokor, Kasarani and Ziwani shopping centres.

The fees in the new areas will be Sh200 per day, Mr Tinega said in a statement.

The county also wants to start charging Sh300 parking in the city’s Central Business District (CBD), up from the current Sh140, next month.

Currently, areas outside the CBD where parking fees is collected include Westlands, Upperhill, Community, Industrial Area, Ngara, Gigiri, Lavington and Karen.

Mr Tinega said if the issues being raised by matatu operators would be addressed conclusively by the courts, the Sh300 per day fee— which has been gazetted— would be effected immediately.

He urged the city residents “to car-pool and avoid bringing all family cars daily into the Central Business District, as we focus on providing essential service to the city residents.”

He was also hopeful that the living standards of residents would be improved once some of the key revenue areas were implemented.

Traders in Nairobi and other residents have been up in arms over increased rates that have pushed up the cost of doing business and the cost of living.
