Calabar brace gives Zesco United first trophy of the season

David ‘Calabar’ Owino’s double strike enabled his new club Zesco United lift lift the Samuel Ndlovu Charity Shield with a 3-1 win over Power Dynamos on Saturday evening.

The former Gor Mahia defender twice headed in Jackson Mwanza corner kicks past Dynamos goalkeeper Joshua Titima in the 31st and 52nd minutes of the game to set his team to victory in a contest played before a packed crowd at the Nkana Stadium in Kitwe.

Owino joined the Zambian side last January in a deal worth Sh 4 million.

CONSOLATION GOAL

Alex Ng’onga scored Dynamos’ consolation goal from the penalty spot, before Lawrence Chungu headed into his own net to gift Zesco United their first trophy of the season in the Zambian league season curtain raiser.

“I wasn’t playing as a striker,” the defender joked during a telephone interview with Nairobi News after the match.

“Am still settling in here and these goals will help me gain confidence ahead of the start of the Zambia League season next weekend. Am also glad to have helped Gor Mahia fans secure revenge over Dynamos(whom beat them 3-0 in a pre-season friendly,” he added.

This result gave Zesco their first win over Dynamos in two seasons. Zesco’s next assignment will be a tie against Guinean side AS Kaloum in a Caf Champions League first round tie this weekend.
