Campus fresh men and women shun Garissa University
Students selected to join university in September have shunned Garissa University College, dealing a big blow to government efforts to revive the institution a year after 148 people were killed in a terrorist attack there.
Of the 710 places at the institution, only 23 have been taken up.
Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service statistics show that there are 687 unfilled slots.
Last year, the college did not admit students following the April attack and those studying at the institution were transferred to Moi University in Eldoret.
The Bachelor of Education (Arts) course has the highest number of unfilled slots at 149 followed by Bachelor of Education (Science) at 95.
CUT-OFF POINT
The placement agency has since announced the second and final revision of course choices ahead of the September admission date after more than 19,209 candidates failed to get their first degree choices.
Chief executive officer John Muraguri said the unplaced students have until June 18 to select new courses.
“This application is open to all candidates who, on competitive selection, have not been placed for any of their degree or diploma choices after the first revision,” said Mr Muraguri.
“Successful candidates will be informed at the end of June after the selection is completed,” he added.
A total of 74,389 students are set to join the 32 public universities.
The cut-off point has been pegged at B of 60 points for male candidates and B- of 58 points for female candidates.
A total 165,766 candidates scored the minimum entry qualification of C+ and above in last year’s examination.
