Case of traffic police behaving badly or a rogue driver crying wolf?

By HILARY KIMUYU December 2nd, 2015 1 min read

A Facebook post and an online video have given contrasting accounts of an apparent standoff between a motorist and a traffic police officer.

The Facebook post by one Steve Njuguna, which has since been removed, showed a uniformed police officer deflating the tyres of a vehicle with the caption:

“Some policemen are behaving like crooks if they don’t have any offence on you they remove pressure from your back tyres (sic) and they make sure they make money towing ur car it is unjust lets make this Langata policeman famous.”

But another video, which has also surfaced online, shows the motorist in a red car disregarding traffic rules and attempting to get away from traffic police officers.

The footage shows the motorist evading the officer who later boards a motorcycle to give chase.

According to witnesses at the scene, the driver sped off on the wrong side of the road after the traffic police attempted to stop him for overlapping.

A chase ensued and the driver was reportedly arrested and released on a cash bail of Sh 5,000 and was due to appear in court on Wednesday.

Efforts by Nairobi News to ascertain the incident were fruitless as calls to Nairobi County traffic commander Edward Mwamburi went unanswered.
