Cash-for-marks UoN lecturer charged in court

A senior lecturer at the University of Nairobi (UoN) lecturer has been charged with receiving a bribe Sh3,000 to award a student marks.

Dr Vincent Mbindo Kathumo appeared before Milimani Nairobi, anti-orruption court where he denied two graft charges.

The accused was arraigned at time when the lecturers and university staff are on strike over salary increment.

Dr Kathumo denied receiving a bribe of Sh3,000 from a student by the name Mr Duncan Kibet “so as to award him examination marks.”

State prosecutor, Daniel Karuri, told Senior Principal Magistrate, Felix Kombo, that Dr Kathumo demanded and received the bribe to award the student marks.

CHEATING

The charge stated that the accused had allegedly caught the student cheating during the last semester exams, “a function to which the alleged bribe relates.”

The alleged offence was committed on January 18, 2017 at the Faculty of Agriculture in Uthiru, Kabete Campus of the UoN.

The second charge states that on the same day and place he demanded a bribe of Sh5,000.

Defence lawyer Titus Koceyo applied to have the university don released on bond but Mr Karuri urged the court to take judicial notice of the allegations that the education standards in the country is dwindling.

Releasing the suspect on bond Mr Kombo directed the don to deposit a cash bail of Sh80,000 or an alternative bond of Sh100,000 with one surety.

The trial against Dr Kathumo begins February 17, 2017 and the state has been directed to furnish the accused with witness statements.
