Chaos in Nairobi as rival camps clash over voter listing

Chaos broke out in Nairobi’s Kariobangi North estate after supporters of rival politicians clashed over voter registration.

There had been tension since last week when an aspiring ward representative accused the incumbent of transporting non-residents to register as voters in the area.

The two politicians met on Monday and engaged in a heated exchange of words that took a violent turn when their supporters joined the fray.

ROB MOTORISTS

Goons took advantage of the chaos to rob innocent pedestrians and motorists.

Some rowdy youths entered matatus and snatched valuables from commuters. Calm was restored hours later when police arrived.

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission said violence has been reported in parts of the city including Starehe, Mathare, Embakasi North and Ruaraka.

The commission’s chief executive officer Ezra Chiloba said the violence was occasioned by a high number of voter transfers.

CHANGE VOTING CENTRE

Besides registration of new voters, the exercise also targets voters who wish to change the centres where they wish to vote next year.

Mr Chiloba said voters can change their voting centres 90 days before an election, and must physically fill the transfer form at the new electoral area.
