The estranged husband of Kalenjin songbird Diana Chemutai popularly known as Chelele on Thursday appeared before a Kericho court  in connection with her murder.

Mr Erick Musila, a police officer, appeared before senior Principal Magistrate George Ong’ondo.

Mr Musila however did not take a plea after the magistrate directed that the case be referred to Kericho High Court Judge Hedwig Ong’udi.

The officer, who kept his face down and partly hidden under the hood of the purple jacket he was wearing, listened pensively and betrayed no emotions as the charges were read out to him.

The suspect was arrested on Wednesday in Nakuru.

TIGHT SECURITY

“On January 7, this year at Kapkwen within Bomet County, the accused murdered Diana Chemutai Musila alias Chelele,” read the charge sheet.

The magistrate ordered that Mr Musila be remanded at the Kericho Police Station until February 8 when he is expected to take a plea before Mr Justice Ong’udi.

Security was tight around the court in an effort by the police to keep members of the public at bay.

Mr Musila was escorted out of the court premises under tight security in a convoy of three police vehicles.

It is not the first time that Mr Musila has been accused of committing murder. In 2012, he, alongside his now deceased wife, were accused of being behind the murder of then Eldoret-based surveyor Eliud Kipchirchir Yego.

Then case is still pending before the High Court.
