China Road managers to be charged with Sh100K bribery

Two senior managers of a company that has won big tenders have been arrested for attempted bribery.

Mr Tang Ju, an engineer and Mr Liu Yabin, a liaison officer with China Roads and Bridge Corporation were arrested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission investigators on Friday and Saturday respectively.

Detectives said the two were bribing Kenya Highways Authority officials to allow overloaded trucks pass through weighbridges.

Four trucks with building materials belonging to the firm, which is constructing the standard gauge railway, were also impounded in the operation that also involved KeNHA officials.

EACC said Mr Tang was arrested in Emali for attempting to give a Sh100,000 bribe to a KeNHA official.

Two trucks were detained. He will be charged in Machakos on Tuesday.

“He was booked at Emali Police Station and released on a Sh200,000 cash bail. His passports was also retained,” the statement added.

Mr Liu was arrested in a joint EACC, KeNHA operation. The statement said he attempted to give a Sh30,000 bribe to another officer.

He was released on a cash bail of Sh60,000 and will be taken to court in Mombasa on Friday. His passport was retained at Taru Police Station.

The commission warned KeNHA and police officers against allowing bribery on Kenyan roads.

It said it would intensify crackdowns on major highways.
