Chips and chicken not unhealthy after all, study

Eating chips and deep fried chicken does not increase the risk of getting a heart disease, according to a new study.

The  research published on Monday in the  Annals of Internal Medicine journal found that people who ate higher levels of saturated fat did not seem to have more heart disease compared to those who ate less saturated fat.

The research also did not find reduced instances of heart diseases in people eating high amounts of unsaturated fats.

Dr Rajiv Chowdhury, the lead author in the study and a cardiovascular epidemiologist, said the study shows that it is not saturated fat that people should worry about in their diets.

Medics were however quick to warn that the study should not act as a green light for people to eat fast foods rich in saturated fats. They said emphasis should be laid on diets rich in unsaturated fats like nuts, fish, avocado and olive oil.

Most fast food joints prefer using saturated fats because they are cheap and can withstand high cooking temperatures.

Nairobi has lately witnessed a rise in fast food joints,  attracting international brands like KFC, Burger King and Naked Pizza.
