City askaris accused of murder out on bond

The High Court in Nairobi on Wednesday granted bond to four city askaris accused of killing a city hawker last year in Nairobi.

The four, Mr Alfred Ongesi alias Brown, Mr Julius Ochieng, Mr Ambani Akasi alias Ogesi and Mr Marigo Protus, alias Sarara, were charged with killing Mr Irungu Kamau, a hawker, on September 16, 2015 at Nyam Hotel along Duruma Road Nairobi.

The four, who appeared before Justice James Wakiaga, were released on a Sh2 million bond with similar surety and an alternative bail of Sh500,000 each.

CASE HEARING

In his ruling, the judge said that the prosecution did not give any compelling reason to deny the accused their constitutional right.

However, the four were released on conditions that their employer re-deploy them away from the city center and that they follow the rule of law.

The incident, according to the prosecution, came to light after Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko threatened to resign if authorities failed to track down rogue city county askaris whom he accused of harassing and killing hawkers.

The case will be mentioned on April 14, 2016 to set hearing date.
