City askaris impound Mombasa-bound buses in parking row – PHOTOS

Passengers heading to the coastal region were stranded in the city centre on Thursday after city askaris impounded buses for non payment of  seasonal parking.

Also affected were matatu shuttles plying the Nyahururu and Nyeri routes.

The city askaris descended on the Mombasa-bound buses on Accra Road at 6.30am and clamped them.

Passengers who had boarded the buses were forced to disembark.

Head of parking in Nairobi County Fredrick Ndunyu said the operation targeted Public Service Vehicles that had not paid for seasonal parking.

“If these vehicles could have paid seasonal ticket as required we would not be inconveniencing their passengers. We would get our revenue and their business would go on undisturbed,” said Mr Ndunyu.

He said bus companies had resorted to hiding their vehicles to wait for parking attendant to leave before continuing with business.

Deputy head of parking Paul Wanga said buses pay a monthly parking ticket of Sh7,000 each, while mini-buses pay 5,250.

In total, passengers in four buses were ordered to disembark during the operation. The buses were taken to City Hall’s holding centres.
