Nairobi’s commuters basked the morning sun on Tuesday stuck in traffic in the city’s major roads.

The traffic jam along Waiyaki Way stretched past Westlands.
The traffic jam along Waiyaki Way stretched past Westlands.

According to the Nairobi county traffic commandant Edward Mwamburi, a 20 tonne lorry broke down at Mbagathi way and caused a heavy snarl up on all roads connecting to it including Lan’gata road, Ngon’g road and Valley road.

The heavy traffic subsequently spilled on Uhuru highway and Mombasa road.

” The lorry could not be towed away by a breakdown. It is a mechanical problem,” explained Mr Mwamburi.

Traffic police officers will cease to be on city roads effective March 1  and their roles fully handed over to traffic marshals.
