City contracts private firm to clean up streets

Nairobi county has contracted a private company to manage street sweeping and garbage collection in the city centre.

The company, Creative Consolidated, took up the mandate beginning March.

The county has redeployed four garbage trucks to assist the company in sprucing up the city centre.

County director of Environment Leah Oyake-Ombis, at a previously press briefing, had explained that these are the initial steps towards collection of 2,000 tonnes of garbage generated in Nairobi per day.

Also on the cards is a contract for delivering sanitation services to residents of Kangemi, Kileleshwa and Kilimani that will kick off in July.

“We want to delineate the areas as one unit of waste collection and give an independent waste collection company or a joint venture, the monopoly to collect waste, sweep streets and charge the residents,” Dr Oyake-Ombis had said.
