City Hall seizes CBD building over land rates arrears

By JOHN MUCHIRI February 5th, 2015 1 min read

Nairobi County government has taken over the management of Portal Chambers building on Banda street for non-payment of land rates.

Occupants of the building were thrown into a panic early Thursday morning when dozens of Nairobi County officials stormed in and temporarily stopped operations

The building houses the popular Rayan Restaurant.

The county officials, both in uniform and plain clothes, closed the doors of the restaurant to erect a banner that announced the takeover of building’s management.

According to the county officials, the owners of the building, LR No. 209/13271 , Seo and Sons Limited, owe Nairobi City County a total of Sh999, 521 in land rates arrears.

“All the tenants in this building should as of today start paying rent to the Nairobi City County and not the original owners,” said one of the county officials.

By the time the commotion ended, the owners of the building had not arrived at the scene.
