A trader was on Tuesday arrested in Nairobi’s Moi Avenue after being found with 10 tonnes of plastic bags.

Mike Nene, a proprietor of a major plastics shop near Khoja stage, was arrested by a team of inspectors from the National Environment and Management Authority (Nema).

He was handed over to investigators as the plastic bags were loaded into vehicles and confiscated.

Nema Communications Manager Evans Nyabuto told Nairobi News, “Investigations are ongoing with plans to arraign him in court this week.”

Mr Nene will be the first person to be charged since the plastic ban took effect last week.

The penalty for being found using, manufacturing or importing the bags is stiff.

“Any person who contravenes the provision of the gazette notice shall be liable to a fine of not less than Sh2 million and not more than Sh4 million, or imprisonment of a term of not less than one year but not more than four years or to both,” Nema says in a notice on its website.

The Authority had said arrests will begin this week dedicating the whole of last week to creating awareness.
