Why city politicians face risk of huge fines from IEBC

Campaign materials are still dotting parts of city after the expiry of a deadline that ordered politicians to remove such materials.

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission’s (IEBC) seven-day ultimatum for parties and candidates to get rid of all campaign materials ended on Tuesday.

This included all banners, billboards, placards and posters. Failure to remove such materials attracts penalties like fines, or in the extreme, being candidates are barred from participating in future elections.

But a spot check around the capital on Wednesday found campaign posters still posted in Parklands area, Muthurwa market, and Machakos Country Bus.

Around Landhies Road, posters of politicians, mostly MCA aspirants, are still on walls and litter bins.

In Parklands, from Lower Kabete Road TO First Parklands Avenue and Muthithi Road, posters of former area MCA Jeffer Kassam, aspirants Stephen Musyoka, Shamsherali Lalani and Abdi Ali Abdi are still on different walls across the ward.

FACILITATE CLEARANCE

The National Environment Management Authority (Nema) had also required all candidates to pull down the billboards, banners and posters to prevent environmental pollution or pay a fee to facilitate clearance of the posters.

A section of city politicians led by Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, activist Boniface Mwangi, Westlands MP Tim Wanonyi and senatorial aspirant Suzanne Lengewa Silantoihad have removed their campaign posters.

Mr Mwangi had two weeks ago led a group of youths to remove his posters in the Central Business District.

Governor Sonko has already deployed his Sonko Rescue Team to pull down all his campaign posters and those of other politicians.
