City school wants parents to send money for teachers’ trip, with withdrawal fee

A Nairobi private primary school has written to parents urging them to fund a teachers’ team building trip to Mombasa and include withdrawal fees.

Heritage Junior School in Langata sent parents the letter on September 9 with three main subjects; that of the Monday being a public holiday, teachers’ trip and school fees balance.

In the letter signed by the head teacher Mrs P Situma, parents were informed that the trip is “aimed at enabling teachers and other workers to serve our pupils better”.

The head teacher asked each parent to pay Sh1500 for the November trip adding, “Please note that you can pay in installments via the class teachers or through Tr. Angelica’s M-Pesa No. *** (include withdrawal charges).”

The M-Pesa withdrawal fee for Sh1500 is Sh27 meaning the teacher will receive an extra amount from parents.

NA YA KUTOA

When Nairobi News contacted the teacher whose number was noted in the letter, she said one can send what they have for now.

She could not, however, give an explanation as to why it was indicated that withdrawal fee be included while sending.

Na ya kutoa (withdrawal fee) is a running joke among M-Pesa users in Kenya.

The same letter to parents urged them to clear all school fees balances stating, “Pupils with such arrears will not be allowed in school come Tuesday 13th September 2016.”
