City traffic snarl-up could soon be a thing of the past
Traffic in Nairobi could ease after link road and foot/bike paths commissioned by Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero are completed.
The project is partly funded by the European Union (EU) who will release Sh 3.4 billion to the construction of eight link roads within the county to ease traffic congestion.
Among the roads to be expanded in partnership with the Kenya Urban Roads Authority is Likoni Road that will be expanded into a dual carriageway.
During an inspection tour of roads being maintained and rehabilitated by KURA on Friday, Dr Kidero and EU’s Dorian Kivumbi marked the EU funded anti-congestion road building programme by planting a tree near Likoni Road.
“Dorian Kivumbi with @KideroEvans at Likoni Road. 1 of 8 road links in Nairobi being built with Sh 3.4bn from EU,” read a tweet by EU.
HELP THE CITY GROW
During the launch of the project mid this year, EU Ambassador to Kenya Lodewijk Briet said the move will help the city grow as since in the past Nairobi’s economy been hampered by traffic congestion.
Other roads that will be improved for the programme include Lusaka Road, Enterprise Road and Quarry Road which will be turned into a dual carriageway.
Ring Road, Parklands will also be turned into dual carriageway from Westlands roundabout and Juja Road will be extended to Thika Road.
Foot and bike paths will be built along Rabai, Mumias South Lusaka roads.
Traffic congestion has been a problem in the city with most residents on the view that the county government should come up with solutions to the problem.
Easing traffic congestion in the city was part of Dr. Kidero’s election manifesto during his campaign for the county’s top job.
