Nairobi’s swanky matatus, popularly known as nganya, will soon get the recognition they have long yearned from the county government during the Nairobi Festival whose inaugural edition will be held in December.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja made the announcement on Thursday, while also revealing that the festival will be held every December after Jamhuri day to celebrate the “vibe of the city”.

“In December we will set aside some streets to display culture, food, creativity, have the nganya awards for the best done matatus, have rugby, football and basketball tournaments and many other activities,” Sakaja said.

The city has experienced graffiti galore for years as artists display their work through decoration in matatus.

Nairobi-based creatives have also received more good news following a directive by Governor Sakaja to have laws that inhibit photography, videography, film and the creative industry in the city to be amended.

The governor issued the directive during a meeting with the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

“When we say we want to be probusiness it is not just passive to stop harassment of traders but we want to be proactive to facilitate and promote. There are many archaic laws including those that hamper creativity and innovation and we are going to weed those out,” Governor Sakaja said.

Governor Sakaja welcomed partnership with the chamber of commerce to improve the ease of doing business in Nairobi.

During the meeting, the governor said that businesspeople should spend more time doing their business, and not chasing compliance issues with the authorities.

KNCCI Nairobi Chapter Chairman Julius Opiyo said there are a number of international firms that want to invest in Nairobi, including one for assembling of electric motorcycles. The governor was accompanied by his deputy Dr James Njoroge Muchiri.
