Cleophas Malala calls for investigations on Uhuru, Raila Treasury dealings

United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary General Cleophas Malala says former president Uhuru Kenyatta and Azimio leader Raila Odinga diverted public funds to personal use in the run up to the August 2022 polls.

In a media address, Malala described as shocking revelations by the Controller of Budget Margaret Nyakang’o that she was asked to make payments worth Sh15 billion in 26 minutes.

Nyakang’o made the claims when she appeared before the Parliamentary Public Petitions Committee.

“The revelations by the controller of budget on the reported theft of Sh15 billion in under 26 minutes just before the end of Uhuru’s tenure is deeply troubling. It is outrageous these two so-called “handshake partners” were actually partners in crime,” he explained.

UDA has requested the relevant authorities to investigate the matter.

“We urge the anti-graft agencies to hastily commence investigations in light of the revelations by the Controller of Budget and unearth all the corrupt leaders and their accomplices. We also demand an audit of all the capital projects undertaken by the rogue handshake regime in view of ascertaining whether public funds were expended to private businesses,” Malala added.

The comptroller of budget produced what she alleged were conversation between her and former Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani.

The committee was shown correspondences reportedly indicating that on August 4, 2022, CS Yatani wrote to Nyakang’o at 2:13 pm, saying: “Good Afternoon, please also facilitate similar approvals for infrastructure ministry for amounts of Sh8 billion (sic) andSh 2.billion.”

One hour and 20 minutes later, the person is said to have sent her a photo and wrote “Please help us expedite this.”

In a subsequent email sent a minute after that, she received another message saying: “H.E might even call you if we don’t deal with this by 4 pm.

To which she said she replied: “Are you saying we have 26 minutes to complete the process?”

The document of the purported conversation then shows the person writing: “He’s just called and I assured you that I have spoken to you and that you promised by the end of the day.”
