Coast promoter defends charging Sh 300 for Zuchu’s mum’s concert
Mombasa artiste and promoter Chapatizo has explained the reasoning behind Khadija Kopa’s Sh300 bob show that went down last Saturday in Mombasa.
Whereas her daughter Zuhura Othman alias Zuchu charges not less than Sh2 million for a show outside Tanzania, her legendary mother made a fraction of that at the Coastal town over the weekend.
Speaking to Nairobi News, Chapitizo revealed they paid the veteran Taarab singer Sh200,000 for her performance at the newly renovated Samba Arena club located in Bamburi.
“My brother, you have to understand that there are two sets of gigs. One that is purely profit-oriented and another that is purely for marketing purposes.

Ours was the latter. We were not out to make money from Khadija but wanted to use her huge reputation for marketing the club,” Chapatizo explained.
The Samba chains of clubs famed for Rhumba music in Nairobi, Nakuru, and Mombasa were once owned by ex-Harambee Stars coach Frank Ouna and a partner.
However, the two later sold the clubs during the Covid-19 pandemic when the business was hugely affected, attracting losses.
“As you know, Samba Arena was a big club back then but dipped over the years. The new owner (John Rock) is trying to revive it again. He has renovated and upgraded it to what it used to be before.
We are now marketing it as a new spot using popular names like Khadija Kopa. Everything is different. The ambiance is amazing,” adds Chapatizo, who broke into the limelight over a decade ago with his collaboration hit Kamua Leo featuring Kidis.

By charging 300 bob as gate collection and paying Kopa almost a quarter of a million, the club was still able to make sales which was the whole point of bringing the legend to town.
“It is all about marketing a new chill spot in town, eventually translating into sales. I mean, the gate collection is still part of the club’s income. Those who came spent on food and drinks and all that translated into sales, and probably others will become regular customers.
If anything, we didn’t make a loss. All the costs we put into bringing Kopa to Samba Arena did return that night, and there was more,” Chapatizo added.
