Were continues scoring streak for Zesco
By DAVID KWALIMWA
Harambee Stars forward Jesse Were has hit the ground running at his new Zambian club.
The former Tusker FC forward scored his seventh goal in four outings for Zesco United on Wednesday as the Zambian champions beat Zimbabwe’s Chicken Inn 2-0Â in a pre-season friendly at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
The Kenya international has so far scored in all the matches he has so far featured in for the club.
Were was on the scoresheet as Zesco settled for a 1-1 draw against Tanzania’s Azam FC, and then scored a consolation goal as his team lost 2-1 to arch rivals Zanaco this past week.
GOLDEN BOOT
“I am settling in well here. I should say football in Zambia is more advanced, in terms of technique, tactics, infrastructure and even salaries,” the AFC Leopards and Mathare United player told Nairobi News.
Were won the Kenyan Premier League golden boot last season but was lured by better pay, estimated to be in the region of Sh7 million over two years, to ditch Tusker and sign for Zesco last December.
He is the club’s first choice forward and will lead the line in the quest for local and continental honours this term. Were’s compatriots, David ‘Calabar’ Owino and Anthony Akumu also play for Zesco.
