Court allows police to detain suspects in Sh94.9m Quickmart heist for 10 days
A Nairobi court has allowed police to detain five suspects linked to the theft of Sh94 million for 10 days.
The suspects were produced in court on November 14, 2023, and police requested they be detained for 21 days so as to allow for completion of the ongoing investigations.
The suspects include Ismael Patrick Gitonga, Michael Matolo Njeru, Samuel Onyango Haya, Martin Nderi Ng’ang’a and James Mbatia Kariuki.
They were arraigned before Milimani senior Principal magistrate Zainab Abdul Five in relation to the theft of the sum belonging to Quick Mart Supermarket.
The case has attracted public interest.
State prosecutor Abel Omariba, while request for the detention of the suspect, told the court the investigations are complicated in nature as they cover a large geographical area.
The prosecutor explained that police have managed to recover Sh9.1 million of the amount that had been stolen. He also explained that the remaining amount of money is with the suspects who are still at large.
“I pray these suspects who were arrested on November 10, 2023, be detained for 21 days to enable police complete investigations,” urged Mr Omariba.
The Defence lawyers however opposed the detention period and claimed the suspects had been tortured while in custody.
One of the suspects appeared in court while appearing to struggle to walk.
In the incident, it was reported that employees attached to a security firm walked to work and drove away with a van containing the cash without following protocol.
The employees drove towards a Nairobi suburb where they abandoned the van and used a get away car to reportedly carry away the cash.
A few days later, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI)
