Court denies preacher Gilbert Deya bail in miracle babies case

A Milimani court on Friday denied controversial Televangelist Gilbert Deya bail.

The preacher, who was extradited from Britain last week and charged with child theft, had applied to be released on bail.

Deya’s case will be mentioned on August 25 and hearing was set for September.

He has denied 5 counts of stealing children.

Prosecution was told to supply the defense counsel with witness statements and documentary evidence.

On Thursday Deya decried the poor conditions at Kamiti Maximum Prison when he appeared in court.

Through his lawyer John Swaka, the preacher said the conditions in the room where was being held were pathetic and not fit for human habitat.

Mr Swaka said Britain and Kenya agreed that the preacher be accorded VIP treatment but that was not happening.

The preacher was arraigned at Milimani Court last week hours after landing at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) under tight security.

Five senior prosecutors from the Office of Director of Public Prosecution were present in court for the case. They were led by Nicholas Mutuku, Tabitha Ouya, Victor Mule, Edwin Okello and Hellen Mutela.

Mr Deya is represented by lawyers John Sakwa and Cliff Ombeta.
