A man accused of impersonating Deputy President William Ruto’s wife will remain in police custody for three days.

Magistrate Muthoni Nzibe allowed the police to continue holding Michael Mito Atito pending the completion of investigations in which he is accused of opening a fake social media account using Rachel Ruto’s name and photo.

According to Chief Inspector George Chai, the said suspect opened a Facebook account in which he claimed that he was supporting the less fortunate in the society by giving out free lorries.

The court was told that the suspect, together with others who had not been arraigned in court, he had also asked unsuspecting members of the public for money to register the said vehicles in their names.

“It has been proven for me on oath that for the purpose of an investigation into the commission of an offense it is necessary or desirable to be remanded at Central Police station for three days,” said Magistrate Nzibe.

Police said they needed to record key witness statements who reside in Kisumu where the suspect was arrested.

Police also intend to obtain M-Pesa account details of the suspect in order to confirm his transactions as well as contact members of the public who were victims of the scam.

Police further want him subjected to an identification parade by victims of the scam.

The alleged money obtained from unsuspecting public was fraudulently acquired as well as the claims that the suspect was to register the lorries.

The suspect is yet to be charged in court but the court heard that he was being investigated for impersonation contrary to Section 15 of the Penal code.

He will be arraigned in court again on February 11.
