Courts acquits 40 Asians arrested in Runda for cyber crime

A magistrate court on Friday acquitted 40 Asians arrested in Runda estate and ordered that they be repatriated to their countries.

Among the 40 are 35 Chinese and five Taiwanese.

Senior Principal Magistrate Joyce Gondani ruled that prosecution failed to prove that they were involved in running unlicensed telecommunication system.

The magistrate said the evidence of the defence was credible and convincing.

The 40 had been charged with running telecommunication system without a license, conspiracy to commit felony and engaging in organized crime. They had denied the said charges.

They were arrested in November 2014 after a fire was spotted in a residential house in Runda. One Chinese national died in the inferno.

Several mobile phones, laptops, routers were found in the house.
