CS Rebecca Miano: Drought far from over


No life has been lost due to the effects of drought, the government has announced.

East Africa and Arid Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano explained as much, adding the government has worked round the clock to ensure Kenyans affected by the drought situation are taken care of.

In an update on the drought situation on Wednesday, January 10, 2022, the CS said the government has reached out to 14,300 households in the 5 most affected counties.

“No life has been lost. I take this opportunity to assure fellow countrymen and women that the Government is committed to building resilience to ensure that our state of preparedness moving forward is taken care of and no life will be lost to hunger forthwith,” CS Miano said.

She assured Kenyans the government is on top of the situation and doing its best to mitigate drought effects.

Out of the- 23 arid and Semi-Arid (ASAL) counties, the situation remains critical in 22 counties following poor short rains that were recorded in October-December.

The National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) has categorized nine counties including Kilifi, Mandera, Marsabit, Samburu, Turkana, Wajir, Isiolo, Kitui and Kajiado are in currently on Alarm Drought Phase.

Other 13 other counties including Garissa, Lamu, Narok, Tana River, Makueni, Tharaka Nithi,

Baringo, Laikipia, Meru, Taita Taveta, West Pokot, Nyeri and Kwale are in Alert Drought Phase.

According to the CS, the steering team distributed relief food to 14,300 households in 5 counties in December alone under Wakenya Tulindane initiative.

The relief assistance targeted 2,860 households in the worst affected sub-counties including Magarini (Kilifi), Mwingi North (Kitui), Samburu East (Samburu), Moyale (Marsabit) and Igembe North (Meru).

During the address, the CS thanked all the stakeholders and Kenyans who have stepped in to assist.

“At the same time, we urge our worthy stakeholders to ride the crest of the existing goodwill to join the Government in minimising inefficiencies and maximizing our envisaged impact.”
