Schoolgirl still homeless, lays hope on children’s home

The 10-year old schoolgirl who has been sleeping on her father’s doorsteps has not yet found a children’s home despite public outcry after Nairobi News had highlighted her misery.

The girl’s counselor, who spent the whole of Thursday with her at Kariobangi police station, called Nairobi News late in the evening to announce that they had not found a children’s home that could accommodate her.

Their efforts to get admission at a children’s home in Kasarani  proved futile after they were told that it is full. Another facility for destitute children in Muthaiga was said to have shut down a while back.

The girl spent Thursday night in the house of a neighbour who first highlighted her suffering to  Nairobi News.

The Standard 5 girl from Marura Primary School in Kariobagi North has been eating, sleeping and doing homework outside the family house in Kariobangi North for close to four years after her father accused her of bringing bad luck to the family.

On Thursday, police arrested her father, Rashid Adan, 47, after neighbours reported the case at Kariobangi police station.

Starehe OCPD Benard Nyakwaka said he will charged on Friday with child neglect.

There is hope that the young girl could be admitted to the Rescue Dada home in Pangani. The administrators at the facility had shut down by the time they were contacted on Thursday, but the girl’s counselor remained optimistic of a better luck Friday.
