Deaflympic voted overall winner at Soya awards

Deaflympic triple gold medallist Simon Kibai Cherono was on Tuesday night crowned the overall sports person of the year award at this year’s Sports Personality of the Year Awards (Soya).

Mr Cherono won the top prize for his achievement in this year’s  Summer Deaflympics Games in Sofia, Bulgaria, where he clinched gold  in the men’s 1,500m, 5,000m and 10,000m.

Athletes Edna Kiplagat and Ezekiel Kemboi were feted as the best sports woman and man respectively.

Ms Kiplagat won the award after becoming the first woman  to retain the marathon world title when she won a gold medal at this year’s World Athletics Championships in Moscow.

Ms Kemboi defeated Harambee Stars captain and Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama in the race for top sports man of the year.

The Sevens Rugby team won the men sports team of the year award, while Kenya prisons volleyball team won the women category.
