Dear Kenyans, Here is what to do once you win an American Green Card

By Winnie Mabel October 25th, 2022 2 min read

Over 50,000 immigrant visas are made available annually to applicants seeking American citizenship. The winners are chosen randomly after completing the rigorous application successfully.

Once the process is over, The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services alerts the winners.

“We issue a Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) to all permanent residents as proof that they are authorized to live and work in the United States. If you are a permanent resident age 18 or older, you are required to have a valid Green Card in your possession at all times.” Immigration Services states on its official website.

This is what applicants must do once they are granted permanent American citizenship via this lottery:

If one is a conditional permanent resident, they cannot renew their two-year Green Card. Instead, they must file to remove this condition 90 days before the Green Card expires, or they will be at risk of losing the permanent resident status that comes with winning the lottery.

“A family-based conditional permanent resident must file a Form I-751, Petition to Remove Conditions on Residence. If you are an investor/entrepreneur-based conditional permanent resident, you must file Form I-829, Petition by Entrepreneur to Remove Conditions,” the site further guided winners.

A lottery winner must replace their Green Card in certain circumstances, including the card is about to expire, lost or stolen, your residency status has changed, you have legally changed your name or you have never received the card previously issued to you, among other reasons.

A lottery winner should look into the benefits of being granted permanent residence in the USA. Some benefits include using the Green Card to Prove employment eligibility in the United States when completing the Form I-9 – Employment Eligibility Verification and allowing a cardholder to apply for a Social Security Card and a state-issued driver’s license.

A lottery winner will now have the right to live in America permanently, provided they do not act in a manner that jeopardizes their Green Card status, work in the USA, and be protected by the laws of their land.
