Tragic death of Homeboyz player throws Kenyan rugby in mourning again
Kenya rugby is in mourning yet again following the death of Simbas trialist and Homeboyz prop Andrew Wekesa.
Wekesa was attacked and stabbed by thugs in Mlolongo, Machakos on Sunday night where he had gone to visit his friends.
“We are told he was returning to his family’s house in Kitengela when he was accosted by thugs who stabbed him in the process,” said Homeboyz chairman Mike Rabar. “We don’t have the finer details on what really transpired but we shall issue an official statement later.”
Rabar said that Kenya has lost one of the most promising players. “He had great potential and is sad to lose him in that manner,” said Rabar.
BIG LOSS
The 24-year-old, who just graduated from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, was in 2014 called up to Kenya Simbas but failed to make to the final team.
However, he played for Kenya Under-19 team at the Africa Rugby Cup in 2012, the year he joined Homeboyz straight from Kakamega High School.
Wekesa left Homeboyz for Impala in 2014 Impala but made a return to the DeeJays in 2015. Wekesa didn’t play for Homeboyz who stunned Kenya Harlequin 15-10 on Saturday since he was nursing an injury.
“It’s a big loss to the rugby fraternity,” said Homeboyz coach Paul Murunga. “I am heading to his home to find out what really happened.”
Wekesa becomes the third rugby player to die in less than two months after the deaths of Nondescripts’ Ogeto Gacheo and Mwamba’s Victor Wayodi in December.
