Details of Al Shabaab attack at Iresuki Safaricom mast and three other targets

Three people are feared dead following an early morning attack that suspected Al Shabaab militants carried out in four separate incidents that occurred co-currently.

The attacks occurred in Wargadud Police Station, Elwak Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) camp, Iresuki Safaricom mast, and Jabi Quick Response Unit (QRU) camp.

Nairobi News has established that the militants conducted the attack co-currently and at 1:30 am on Friday, July 14, 2023. Interestingly, all four attacks lasted less than five minutes before the militants fled.

A police report seen by this reporter on the same revealed that a National Police Reservist alerted officers attached to Elwak Police Station that Iresuki Safaricom Mast, which he guards, was under attack.

The reservist, Mr Abdirahman Bashir, further revealed that the militants had overpowered them.

β€œIt was reported at about 01:30am by NPR officer, namely Abdirahman Bashir, who is among those manning Iresuki Safaricom mast through mobile telephone, that they had been overpowered by suspected Al Shabaab militants and the Safaricom mast, which is situated about 15kms from Elwak police station to the north was being destroyed,” the police report which is in our possession read in part.

Moments later, efforts to reach him on the same mobile number he had used to call the station did not bear fruit.

There is a network hitch within the area, and a team of officers has already been deployed to the site to comb it in pursuit of the militants.

Cases of Al Shabaab militants carrying out attacks in the country have been on the increase in the recent past.

The incidents even increased after the Kenya Government agreed to open the Kenya- Somalia border following a meeting with the top leadership of the two countries.
