Did students burn down Maseno University administration block?

Police in Kisumu are pursuing possible links of the Thursday morning fire that burnt down sections of the Maseno University administration block to the forthcoming students’ union elections.

Initial police reports indicate that some students had on Wednesday night mobilized their colleagues to riot over a decision to bar one candidate from the elections.

Students who talked to Nairobi News also claimed that a group of unknown people had gone round hostels last night, knocking on doors and urging students to come out to riot.

The Student Organization of Maseno University (Somu) is set to hold elections from October 14, 2015.

Reports from the university indicate that the finance and students’ welfare offices were the ones affected by the fire. Crucial financial statements and records are said to have been burnt.

Administrators were on Thursday morning holed up in a crisis meeting at the Vice Chancellor’s office.

Among the decisions being thought through at the meeting is whether to temporarily shut down the institution and send students home.

Kisumu county commander Nelson Njiri told Nairobi News that no arrests have been made so far.
