Displaced persons camp at KICC
Two groups of internally displaced persons camped outside the Kenya International conference [KICC] on Tuesday demanding for compensation from the government.
The displaced persons were from Mai Mahiu and Kitui.
The Mai Mahiu group said they had spent Monday night at KICC’s gate and will not leave until the government met their demands.
“The government said it will compensate us and build new houses for us, but none of us has received a house or any money,” said Alice Ndiragu one of the IDPS.
She said money meant for the group was given to other people who were not victims of the 2007-2008 post-election violence.
The Kitui group claimed their land was grabbed by the upcoming South Eastern University (SEUKO).
“We have been spending our nights near a river with our children since last month,” said Hannah Kavuli, one of the IDPS.
They claimed some of their children did not sit for their KCPE exams because of the trauma of seeing their houses being demolished.
The two groups are seeking an audience with President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto.
