Doctor in MP’s rape saga charged over licence hitch
A doctor mentioned in rape allegations against Imenti Central MP Gideon Mwiti Irea was on Monday charged with operating a medical clinic without a permit from the Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board (MPDB).
Dr Muchiri Mwangi, proprietor of Fig Tree Medical Centre in Ngara, Nairobi did not have valid licence to operate a pharmacy from the Pharmacist and Poisons board, according to documents presented in court.
The charges state that on March 27, he was found at the clinic engaging in private medical practice in a place not authorised by the MPDB.
The court also heard that between January 1 and March 25 this year, Dr Mwangi engaged in private practice as a medical doctor without a licence.
HIV TEST
Mwangi’s name was mentioned in rape allegations facing Mr Mwiti after a woman who accuses the MP of sexual assault, claimed he administered a HIV test without her consent.
Officers from the MPDB visited his clinic to carry investigations after the incident was reported in the media.
On Monday, an attendant in his clinic, John Kinyua was charged with operating a pharmacy in the clinic without a licence.
Both Mwangi and Kinyua denied the charges and told the court that the claims were a result of recent media reports.
“I have all the relevant documents and I wonder why I am being harassed. I had my bond cancelled by the police this morning and I had to enter the court from this tunnel,” Dr Mwangi said referring to an entrance to the court cells.
The two were released on Sh100,000 bond each and the case set to be heard on July 2.
Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet on Sunday said a decision on whether to prosecute Mr Mwiti over the rape allegations will be known soon as investigations are almost complete.
GATHERING EVIDENCE
Police say they have almost finished gathering evidence as officers handling the case are only waiting for a DNA analysis from the Government Chemist.
The team of investigators comprising two officials from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) visited the scene of the alleged crime on Friday.
They also visited the rape victim at home and recorded further statements from her. The 29-year old journalist was discharged from hospital on Wednesday.
The team also recorded statements from other witnesses, including a driver who took the woman home after the alleged attack on March 21.
