One of the survivors who spoke to Citizen TV detailed how he was detained at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) for days after discharge until he paid some small deposit and signed a deal to pay Sh3, 000 every month.

Emmanuel Omalla was among the first survivors to be rescued at the scene of the attack on January 15. He was rushed to KNH where he was hospitalised.

DP Ruto visited the survivors at the hospital two days later and promised that the government would offset their medical bills.

“Nilipigwa risasi mingi, zingine kwa mgongo, zingine kwa kiuno, ingine kwa mguu. Nilikuwa nimelala hapo chini kitu twenty minutes ndio nikaona hao maaskari wakikuja wakiwa wamechanganyikana na wazungu ndio wakauliza is there anyone who is alive tumsaidie, ndio mimi nikajikokota pole pole nikainua mikono ndio wakanishika wakanitoa nje,” Omalla narrated.

UNDERWENT SURGERY

He was taken to KNH where he underwent surgery and was treated.

“Nilikaa kitu two days kama sijakosea ndio Deputy President akakuja akasema serikali itatushughulikia halafu the next day madam Cicily Kariuki CS wa health na madam Amina Mohamed wakakuja pia wakasema watatushughulikia,” Omalla said.

The 21-year-old delivery man was left with a Sh100, 000 medical bill after treatment.

The hospital has said the government has not paid the bill of the victims because the attack was not declared a national disaster.

Omalla said he paid a deposit of Sh15, 000, then signed a deal to clear the remaining Sh85, 000 over a period of two years and four months. He will be paying Sh3,000 monthly installments.

After Omalla’s story was aired, Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja called in to say that he would be clearing the Sh85, 000 at KHN first thing Monday morning.
