Eldoret court remands University student in murder case


A third year University student suspected of killing his girlfriend has been detained for six days to enable police complete investigations.

On TMay 25, 2023, an Eldoret court allowed detectives to detain 24-year-old Kenneth Kibet following an application by investigating officers.

In his application, investigating officer Edward Ndemo told the court the accused was arrested on May 1, 2023, and taken to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital for treatmeent after he attempted to committ suicide.

Prosecution documents in court indicated Mr Kibet killed his girlfriend namely Sheila Jemutai before attempting to commit suicide over what the police cited as love triangle.

Since his arrest he has been in hospital receiving treatment before being discharged three days ago.

According to detectives, the accused used a kitchen knife to commit the heinous act at the deceased’s rental house at Sogomo market adjacent to the university.

The incident reportedly occurred on May 1, 2023 in the rental house belonging to the deceased when the suspect was said to have visited her.

Though Mr Ndemo had requested the court for 14 days but the court opted for six days urguing that police had enough time to complete investigations while the suspect was undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Eldoret Senior Principal Magistrate Richard Odenyo directed the suspect be detained at Eldoret central police station cells for six days.
“After having carefully considered the application filed by the police and there being no objection from the suspect, I find there are compelling reasons to warrant detention,” ruled the magistrate.

He directed the police to present the suspect in court on May 30 for further direction.
