Emotional send-off for songbird Achieng Abura
Afro jazz artiste Achieng Abura was given an emotional send-off at her rural home in Muhoroni, Kisumu County on Saturday.
At the low-key ceremony attended by close family members, relatives and friends, Ms Abura was eulogised as a charismatic and courageous person whose songs inspired generations.
Ms Abura died at Kenyatta National Hospital on October 20 after a long battle with illness. She leaves behind a 23-year-old son.
The burial ceremony was attended by Ms Abura’s colleagues in the local entertainment industry, including Suzzane Owiyo, Idi Achieng and Hellen Mtawale.
“As artistes, we are united, contrary to reports that we neglected our sister Abura during the fundraisers she held to settle her son’s medical bills,” said Ms Owiyo.
WARM SOUL
The death of the popular songstress, composer and pianist sparked social media protests, with many people expressing anger over claims that her colleagues deserted her in her hour of need.
Others who spoke at the funeral described Ms Abura as a warm soul and caring mother.
“In Abura, we saw humanity and kindness that will surely be missed. She had a hearty laughter, charisma and grace,” said Ms Achieng.
Local leaders gave the burial a wide berth, except for Nyando lawmaker Fred Outa.
Ms Abura was vocal in defending fellow artistes, speaking against “cartelism” on radio where songs by certain artistes are denied airplay.
Ms Abura made her debut in music in the early 90s with the gospel album I Believe. Over the years, her music adapted other styles like jazz.
Before her death, she was working on an album titled Achieng Abura: Rebirth. She was laid to rest at about 4.15 pm.
